A districtwide policy prohibiting students and staff from opening doors to the outside was recently adopted after a $10,800 security system was installed at the middle school, Southampton High School, Southampton Technical Career Center and Nottoway, Meherrin and Capron elementary schools. I really hate the Z-tol approach to problem solving, but having multiple standards for a single secure access is always a recipe for disaster. As long as the everyone from the District Superintendent to the students have to use the same recognition-for-access routine, penalizing the student, even for a chivalry-based violation, is entirely appropriate.
