Claustrophobia is one of the basest of human fears; a 40-metre dive in a small five-seater submarine is an excellent diagnostic tool for the condition. My knowledge of submarines was limited to The Hunt for Red October and an old Beatles album cover, both positive cultural references. So when the opportunity came up to go submarining off the tropical paradise of Bora Bora in French Polynesia, I dived right in.
