The Obama administration offered to hit the "re-set" button in its relations with Russia and the scrapping of the Polish-Czech facility is a good step in this effort. A sea-borne option provides greater flexibility, responsiveness and doesn't violate anyone's sovereignty or vital interests while still placing an impediment in the way of Iranian ambitions. The United States and Russia should now have a freer hand in cooperating against Al Qaeda and Russia has less incentive to aid Iran. One hopes that the global fight against Al Qaeda and Islamist extremism will be strengthened, Iran will be contained and the American homeland will be made safer, not only from terrorism, but from the missile threat that led to all this activity in the first place. 

This was a pretty provocative installation so abandoning it may have been the right move. It increased our invisibility with only minimal corresponding decrease in invincibility. Hopefully, the Poles and Czechs will come to see it that way, too. After all, it wasn't an anti-tank installation ...
