Assault weapons are readily available in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Weak gun laws in the northern New England states allow criminals easy access to these military-style weapons.

Which they then take to Boston to use because the folks in Vermont, NH and Maine are heavily armed and will kill them if they pull their stunts there.
